According to Microsoft’s official Windows Phone blog, Windows Phone 7 users are the 2nd happiest customers in the US when it comes to the mobile operating system (OS) experience. The graph provided shows that Apple iOS had the most “very satisfied” customers with 70%, followed by Windows Phone 7 with 57% and Google Android coming in at a surprising 3rd with 50%.
The fact that Android only scored a stat of 50% very satisfied customers is not what is surprising, as the Android OS covers a huge number of devices ranging from top-end to bottom-of-the-range and as such provides a hugely variable quality of experience across its many gadgets. What is surprising is that Windows Phone 7 apparently beat Android by a full 7%.
We’ve said many times that the Windows Phone 7 platform is a fantastic starting point for a mobile OS. It’s beautiful, easy to navigate and fast to respond. What it’s been lacking is a large range of functionality like reliable navigation, a wide range of apps and (originally) copy & paste. We’ve certainly never hated Windows Phone 7 and have actually enjoyed the times we’ve spent with it. But at the end of the day the original version just felt a little underdone.
The first major Windows Phone update – “Mango” – is on the verge of being released and has already been shipped to manufacturers, meaning it shouldn’t be too much longer before it hits the market. This is where we’ve been hoping that Microsoft will show its true potential and offer a fully rounded and polished mobile experience for its customers.
But these figures would seem to suggest that Windows Phone 7 customers, as a whole, are already more than happy with their mobile service. We think this is fantastic news.
If these statistics are to be trusted then it’s a good bet that the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update will be welcomed with open arms in the personal consumer market.
Apple and Android have been, by far, the two most dominant mobile handset providers in the smartphone market for a while now so it’ll be nice to see another contender vying for the top spot. More competition almost always means the customer is the ultimate winner.
What do you think? Do you agree that Windows Phone is already a great OS, or are you going to wait to see what Mango has to offer before making up your mind on anything?
