Freedom Mobile’s 150GB Total Freedom plan is one of the most ambitiously priced mobile plans I’ve seen in Canada, and it’s exactly the kind of move I’ve been waiting for from the carrier.
Freedom Mobile has long positioned itself as the affordable alternative to the Big Three, but in 2026, it’s trying to change the narrative. Instead of simply offering cheaper plans with little to complement them, Freedom is pushing high-data 5G options with premium features at noticeably lower prices. That’s exactly what the 150GB Total Freedom plan represents.
Recently, I dug into how the plan performs in the real world, how it compares with traditional carriers like Rogers, Bell, and Telus, and whether it’s actually good enough to replace a postpaid premium plan.
I tested the network across Southern Ontario cities, including Toronto, North York, and Mississauga, focusing on real-world performance while streaming, scrolling social media, hotspotting my laptop, and testing signal strength in crowded environments.
Here’s my full Freedom Mobile review based on real-world use of the 150GB Total Freedom plan.
How I tested Freedom Mobile
Recently, I used Freedom Mobile’s 150GB Total Freedom plan on my Galaxy S26 Ultra to see whether it could realistically replace a premium plan from one of the Big Three in a busy metro city like Toronto.
Here’s what I tested:
- 5G connectivity strength across Toronto and the GTA
- Calling and texting in congested areas like Union Station and the Eaton Centre
- Conducting FaceTime calls using 5G data
- Streaming content across Spotify, Netflix, and YouTube
- Playing games on Xbox Cloud Gaming using mobile data
- Hotspotting my laptop while working remotely
- Uploading and downloading video files to Google Drive
- Testing network reliability indoors and within the TTC subway network
- Contacting customer support
The bottom line
Freedom Mobile has evolved into a legitimate competitor for high-data users, but your experience still depends heavily on where you live.
In major cities like Toronto, Calgary, and Vancouver, as well as other supported metro hubs, the 150GB Total Freedom plan feels like an incredible value. Speeds are fast enough for streaming, hotspotting, and heavy social media usage, and the massive data cap removes the stress of constantly checking usage.
Outside major urban areas, however, the experience still relies more heavily on partner networks. While that keeps you connected, performance won’t always match what you’d get in dense metro areas. But the plan's cost efficiency could make up for it.
Freedom Mobile plans and pricing
Freedom Mobile’s pricing strategy in 2026 is aggressive in the best possible way. The 150GB Total Freedom plan falls within a price range that typically only gets you 75GB–120GB from premium carriers. Compared to the data pool and features Freedom Mobile offers in its plans, I've commonly seen prices around $65/month or higher.

Across all Freedom Mobile plans, customers receive unlimited Canada-wide talk and text. Additionally, the carrier throws in unlimited talk and text functions for over 120 global destinations at no extra cost. You’ll love this perk if you’re travelling and don't want to worry about daily roaming fees. Freedom Mobile's 5G+ data pool isn't limited only to Canada. When travelling in the US and Mexico, your data allotment can be used there as well.
Freedom Mobile family plans
Freedom Mobile does offer minor family plan-style options. The carrier offers the option to add a third line to your account, effectively applying a 50% discount to the plan. This obviously comes with the condition that two lines are already active, paying the full monthly cost.
With this in mind, a three-line account could look something like this:
- Line 1—150GB Total Freedom plan: $50
- Line 2—250GB Total Freedom plan: $60
- Line 3—150 Total Freedom plan: $25
- Total for three lines: $135/month
Or you could split the total three ways for $45/month per line.
Am I satisfied with the 150GB Total Freedom plan?
Yes, the 150GB data allotment is probably more than most people actually need. However, for the price, it's hard to argue against this plan. All of the bells and whistles Freedom Mobile provides give this plan tons of value.
Over the past few weeks, I used the plan as my primary connection for everything like streaming video while commuting, listening to Spotify, and hotspotting my laptop when working remotely. Even with heavy usage, I didn’t come close to using the full 150GB.
Where the plan feels weaker isn’t in the data amount, it’s in the consistency outside major 5G zones. In some suburban areas, speeds dipped noticeably compared with downtown Toronto. Still, even in those cases, the plan remained perfectly usable for everyday tasks.
How I rated Freedom Mobile
WhistleOut's criteria span five key metrics, including price, value, speed, coverage, and customer service. Each is rated out of five stars. The average is then used to form the carrier’s overall score.
Freedom Mobile: 3.5 out of 5.0 overall
Here's a breakdown of Freedom Mobile's ratings across our metrics:
- Price: 5 out of 5
- Value: 5 out of 5
- Data speeds: 3.5 out of 5
- Coverage and network reliability: 3 out of 5
- Customer service: 3 out of 5
Price
Freedom Mobile is one of the cheapest ways to get massive 5G data in Canada right now. A 150GB plan in the $55 to $65 range simply isn't common given everything the carrier includes.
The 150GB Total Freedom plan has all the bells and whistles you could ask for at a fraction of the price when compared to Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Even looking at some of the more competitive flanker brands in Canada, Freedom Mobile edges them out with 5G+ services when available.
Even more importantly, Freedom Mobile doesn’t rely on confusing limited-time pricing tricks. What you see is generally what you pay, which adds a lot of long-term value. Freedom Mobile supports its “Price Freeze Promise”, which applies to all prepaid and postpaid plans. With this, the price you sign up for is the price you'll pay in perpetuity. No surprise increases or predatory price gouging.

Value
When you combine price, data amount, and included features, this plan becomes one of the strongest value options in the Canadian market. The 150GB Total Freedom plan includes 150GB of 5G+ data to use throughout the billing period, with unlimited data at reduced speeds if the data pool is exceeded.
Additionally, you gain access to unlimited talk and text in Canada and 120 global destinations. Domestic calls within the US and Mexico are supported alongside unlimited text if in either country. You also get 10GB of data to use in 120 Roam Beyond destinations for no extra cost. For travellers, this is a major perk as other carriers typically charge upwards of $14/day for roaming in the U.S. alone.

Data speeds
Testing data speeds in Toronto was one of the most interesting parts of this review. Freedom Mobile claims it offers a unique ceiling for its 5G+ network. Whereas many Canadian carriers claim 5G speeds of up to 1Gbps, Freedom Mobile says it can offer up to 900 Mbps, which is still exceptionally speedy and far better than many competitors. For instance, Public Mobile offers a similarly priced $50/month plan with 80GB of 5G data. However, the carrier's speeds pale in comparison, with a ceiling of 250 Mbps.
In dense downtown Toronto areas like Union Station and the Eaton Centre, 5G speeds were consistently fast enough for heavy usage. On average, I found speeds to be pretty consistent, landing at around 200 to 250Mbps. This speed, while not reaching the threshold the Freedom Mobile network supports, is still fast enough to stream 1080p YouTube videos, upload content to Google Drive, and make video calls, all of which worked smoothly. I was a bit surprised to recently attend Toronto Comicon, where thousands of attendees gathered under one roof. I uploaded photos and videos quickly to Instagram without any issues.
However, the 5G experience isn’t identical everywhere. As we'll cover below, Freedom Mobile runs on Telus' network, so the coverage and availability of 5G+ depend on the parent company's network. In some more rural areas, the phone frequently switched between 5G and LTE, which slightly affected performance. Even then, speeds remained good enough for everyday use. When dropping to 4G LTE, speeds averaged between 75Mbps and 90Mbps.

Coverage and network reliability
Freedom Mobile’s coverage has improved significantly, but it still isn’t as strong as the Big Three across the entire country. In Toronto and other large cities in Southern Ontario, signal strength was reliable almost everywhere I tested. From downtown streets to busy shopping areas and transit hubs in the major metro city, I was pleased by the consistency and reliability. Calls remained stable, and data rarely dropped from the 5G network completely.

Outside of Toronto, however, the experience varies more. I've been able to travel to larger cities like Hamilton and Kitchener and find stable 5G networks. It's the space between these cities that Freedom Mobile struggles with. There are still major dead zones where connectivity drops to one bar. The use of the 4G LTE network is common between cities, too. I was also a little stunned to discover my hometown of Guelph, which is arguably pretty large, doesn't have all-encompassing 5G coverage.
As good as Freedom Mobile's coverage map is, there are still many pockets that rely on 4G LTE connectivity or on partnering with EXT networks. If you happen to live in a smaller city, expect to find sub-5G speeds and connections.
Coverage and network reliability: 3 out of 5
Customer service
There are still brick-and-mortar locations in Canada if you'd like the in-store experience. However, Freedom Mobile focuses heavily on digital customer service rather than traditional in-store support. Managing the plan online is straightforward; it just requires you to do it yourself. Changing settings, tracking data usage, and adjusting features all worked smoothly through the web dashboard or on the Freedom Mobile My Account app on iOS and Android.
Support responses were helpful for simple questions. Calling Freedom Mobile's customer support line proved useful for asking questions about roaming inclusions. I also inquired about the carrier's slim family plan offerings and sought other hidden discounts. Unfortunately, the representative I spoke to came out empty-handed, which is no fault of theirs at all. The cherry on top of it all, however, was the 30-minutes I spent waiting to speak to a representative. Upon reflection, I wish Freedom Mobile offered a callback function.

Signing up with Freedom Mobile
Signing up with Freedom Mobile is a clean-cut experience. On the website, you can browse the available plans and view any active discounts the carrier may offer. Once I found the desired plan, I went through the activation flow for a BYOD month-to-month term. Despite this, Freedom Mobile does have a 3-month subscription requirement to activate services with Roam Beyond data.
Freedom Mobile gives customers the option to either activate a traditional SIM card and have it shipped to them or activate an eSIM and set up service right away. I opted for an eSIM, and within 10 minutes of activating my services, I was up and running. Freedom Mobile can also port your phone number from your existing carrier. Though you can’t port your number if you cancel your services prior to activating with Freedom Mobile. So hold off on putting your old plan to bed until you’re all set up.
I always recommend users install the carrier's supplemental app on iOS or Android, and Freedom Mobile's My Account app is no different. Here, you can monitor your monthly data usage, pay your bill, make account changes, etc. It's a functional app that works well and is easy to navigate top to bottom.
Data allotment
With 150GB of 5G+ data, Freedom Mobile readily supports streaming most anything. If you can access its 5G+ network and the ~250Mbps speeds like I could, this plan can power streaming Netflix, Prime Video, Crave, and any other major streaming service. Rounding out my review of Freedom Mobile, I rewatched the first episode of Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 in 1080p with no buffering issues. The stream quality remained consistent throughout the hour-long episode.

Similarly, cloud-streaming games yielded pretty good results. Mileage may vary depending on speeds. As with any cloud streaming platform, the stable connectivity ultimately dictates resolution and latency. I've been supplementing my return to collecting Pokémon TCG cards with playing TCG Card Shop Simulator through Xbox Cloud Gaming with fairly good and consistent experiences. Even if speeds dipped to around 50 Mbps, I could still play—even if latency hiccups occurred.
Freedom Mobile versus the competition
When comparing Freedom Mobile with other carriers, what stands out to me is the relatively low prices for data and features. From my perspective, Freedom Mobile offers the best bang for your buck for 5G+ access and standardized communication across Canada. For $50/month, Freedom Mobile provides a substantial 150GB of data to use, Canada-wide talk and text features, as well as some tantalizing roaming options baked in.
| Feature | Freedom Mobile 150GB Total Freedom | Lucky Mobile Data, Talk and Text | Fizz Mobile 40GB Talk and Text | Public Mobile 80GB Canada-US-Mexico |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Premium data | 150GB | 40GB | 40GB | 80GB |
| High-speed hotspot | Up to 900Mbps | Up to 150Mbps | Up to 300Mbps | Up to 250Mbps |
| Network | 5G+ | 4G LTE | 5G | 5G |
| Additional plan perks | Price Freeze Promise | N/A | No activation fee, My Rewards perks | 2% back in Public Points |
| Price | $50/mo | $39/mo | $37/mo | $50/mo |
| Shop plan | Shop plan | Shop plan | Shop plan | Shop plan |
Compared to the competition, Public Mobile comes close to Freedom Mobile's 150GB data allotment. At the same $50/month price, Public Mobile provides 80GB of 5G data, though at reduced 200 Mbps speeds and similar connectivity perks across Canada, the US, and Mexico. The carrier offers 2% Public Points that can be redeemed for bill credits and free add-ons, which is a perk that's non-existent with Freedom Mobile.
Looking at others like Fizz Mobile and Lucky Mobile, the two offer lower monthly costs, which is a fantastic option. However, with these lower costs, you also get less with your plan. For instance, both carriers only offer 40GB of data (Lucky Mobile sorely lacks 5G) for just shy of $40/month. Additionally, US coverage isn't baked into these plans, so you'll have to pay a bit more for it.
Recap: Would I recommend Freedom Mobile?
Freedom Mobile is currently far more competitive than it used to be. With a passing knowledge of Freedom Mobile a few years ago, I never truly gave the carrier a fair shake. In 2026, the 150GB Total Freedom plan proves the carrier is serious about competing with premium plans while still maintaining a budget-friendly approach.
If you live in a major city and want massive data without paying premium-carrier prices, this plan is absolutely worth considering. If you rely heavily on rural coverage or want the fastest possible speeds everywhere, you may still prefer the alternatives like the Big Three.
For most urban users today, Freedom Mobile’s 150GB Total Freedom plan delivers exactly what it promises: huge data, competitive pricing, and a solid everyday experience.
