Now that Sony’s acquisition of Ericsson’s 50% share of Sony Ericsson has gone through Sony has announced its next logical step: dropping the Ericsson from the brand title. As of somewhere around halfway through next year Sony smartphones will simply be labelled “Sony”.

It’s kind of exciting, considering some of the directions in which Sony has been trying to push its smartphone business in recent months. Although the gaming-centric Xperia Play and S1/S2 tablets have seen limited success, we’re still big fans of companies messing around with niche markets. We still see a lot of potential for a smartphone with a gaming focus and Sony’s buyout of Ericsson has filled us with hope that there might be another attempt.

Not only that, but with Sony’s already existing PlayStation platform it will be possible for Sony Android devices to compete with the Windows Phone OS’s Xbox Live compatibility, driving both the gaming and handset giants further forward through enhanced competition.

A buyout like this definitely indicates that Sony is going to start taking its smartphone line very seriously. We expect to see some solid attempts at grabbing more of the global smartphone market out of the Japanese Giant very soon and we can’t wait to see just how Sony plans on doing it.

Of course, there’s still a while to wait so for now all we can do is harness our imaginations. We’re thinking a portable PS Phone with quad-core, HD screen and LTE connectivity? Well, maybe not, but please don’t tread on our dreams just yet.
