Google has released the Chrome web browser beta for Android users. Unfortunately only those with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich can download and use the app, which is still a pretty small percentage of active devices right now.
The apparent focus, for now, is on speed and efficiency, rather than aesthetics or stability. The general idea is obviously to show off the basic functionality of Android Chrome as opposed to other browsers. So far just what’s been added is a little unspecific, but we do know that tabs have been added which should make viewing multiple pages a much faster and easier process.
We have heard that the new Chrome browser for Android will not support Flash. This is just another continuation of the will they/won’t they news about Ice Cream Sandwich Flash support we’ve been getting for months. However, right now it’s starting to sound like Chrome will be a Flash-free browser.
It’s a bit of a shame, seeing as Flash is a really handy tool to have on your smartphone right now. But as we’ve said before Flash is a pretty inefficient service and, ultimately, focusing on replacing it with HTML5 will be beneficial in the long run. It’s just a shame that Chrome users on ICS will be the first to make sacrifices in the march for progress.
You can grab the Android Chrome Beta from the Android Market.
