Google introduced the Pixel Fold, its first foldable phone, during Google I/O 2023 on May 10. Unfortunately, some bad news followed the announcement: the Pixel Fold will not be available in Canada, at least for the time being.
So, will the Fold ever be available in Canada? Google hasn't said anything about the future, so we're left to speculate. If it does arrive, it'll be pricy, considering the device is currently priced at $1,799 in the US.
Read on to learn about the brand new Google Pixel Fold, rumours about a potential release, and how to activate the device in Canada.
Pixel Fold release date
For now, the Pixel Fold is not available in Canada. The device is now available in the US, the UK, and Japan, with no indication for if or when it might be released elsewhere. This is, unfortunately, typical for new devices: brands often test out new products in larger markets before making them more widely available. Google has hinted that the Fold might be available in more places in the next year or two, after they've gauged the demand for the device.
That presents a (potential) upside for Canadians: if the Pixel Fold eventually makes its way to the Great North, it'll likely be a better version of the device. First-generation devices are sometimes prone to problems that are only exposed after they've been in actual users' hands, out in the wild. If the Pixel Fold arrives in Canada, it'll potentially be a better, stronger, and faster piece of machinery.
Pixel Fold price and preorder details
The official price for the Pixel Fold 2023 in the US is $1,799. If the Pixel Fold comes to Canada, it'll likely be priced to compete with the Galaxy Z Fold4, which can be purchased from Samsung for $2,309.99. Our best guess is the Pixel Fold will be priced between $2,200 and $2,500 for Canadians.
While the Fold can't be purchased in Canada, savvy users have wondered whether the device could be purchased in the US and then activated in Canada. At the moment, we can't find a reason why this wouldn't work: the wireless bands used in the US are the same as Canada, meaning (in theory) your Fold would be able to connect to wireless networks in Canada. The biggest potential hurdle is your carrier. If you're thinking about trying out this scheme, be sure to talk with your carrier beforehand to confirm they'd be able to activate your brand-new Pixel Fold.
Pixel Fold cameras
The Pixel Fold has five cameras, including an ultrawide camera with a 121-degree field of view. The Fold also features all of the camera features Google rolled out with the Pixel 7, including Rear Camera Selfie, Magic Eraser, Photo Unblur, Long Exposure, Real Tone, and 4K video.
Pixel Fold design
A few social media leaks provided some early looks at the Pixel Fold. At the end of April, Twitter user Za_Raczke released a video of what appears to be a Fold, demonstrating how the device moves from phone to tablet.

A few weeks later, Google released its own teaser on YouTube in a video entitled "May The Fold Be With You." The video confirms the rumours saying the Fold will be available in two colours: chalk and obsidian.
CNBC reported that the Fold will have a 5.8-inch screen and fold into a 7.6-inch tablet. These measurements appear to be in line with the Folds that appear in the leaked videos.
