There have been almost as many rumors running around the web about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S III than about the soon-to-be-launched iPad 3. Now, finally, we’re getting some pretty viable information about what we can expect from Samsung’s next flagship device.
Probably the most interesting piece of goss we’ve heard is that the Galaxy S III will sport a ceramic frame. Yes, you read that correctly. Not a plastic, aluminum or polycarbonate case, but a ceramic one. It makes sense from an engineering standpoint, as we can make some pretty damn tough ceramics these days that are a fraction the weight of strong metals, but a mass production ceramic phone will definitely be a first from where we’re standing.
Of course the handset will come rocking at least a quad-core 1.5GHz processor. We say at least because when the Galaxy S II was originally announced its spec-sheet showed a dual-core 1GHz CPU which was later upgraded to 1.2GHz in the face of competition.
A whopping 4.8 inch 1080p display with 16:9 aspect ratio will also be supplied. 1080p on a phone is definitely very cool. We’re only just getting over the fact that 720p devices are rocking about in people’s pockets so this is just another awesome step up.
Surprisingly no real rear camera upgrade to be heard of yet. Just an 8MP rear shooter with a 2MP fron-facing camera. As we’ve discussed before the MP rating of a camera is hardly an accurate way to judge photo quality, so we’re interested to see if Samsung has any new lens or software tech up its collective sleeve for this one.
4G LTE is the word on the street. Whether or not that’s a global standard or if Samsung will be releasing two different LTE and an HSPA+ versions is unclear. But we’re hoping for an LTE all-rounder here.
Of course the phone will come rocking Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS). Funnily enough, depending on the phone’s release date, we could have already seen ICS supplanted by the expected 4.1 or 5.0 Android Jellybean OS update by then.
Thoughts, anyone? Considering how awesome the Galaxy S II was when it was released with its large screen and ultra-thin profile we’re expecting a lot from the Galaxy S III. But, like with everything, there are more than a few doubters and nay-sayers around the web right now. Which side do you fall on?
