Public Mobile is launching a first-of-its-kind subscription phone service offering 5G and 4G cellular services for Canadian wireless customers.
The company has also launched a mobile app to continue offering its services to customers online. The app allows customers to manage their accounts and set up wireless service.
“We know many Canadians are looking for something different when it comes to their phone service. You want something that fits your life, does what it promises, gives you the flexibility to change things up on your terms, with no surprises or extra fees,” Jim Senko, Chief of the Unexpected Officer at Public, wrote in a statement. (Senko is also EVP and Chief Product Officer at Telus Mobile, Public Mobile’s parent company.)
The subscription plans are designed to mimic regular cell phone plans but on a prepaid, no-contract network. The company offers rewards points and compares its app experience to other subscription plans like streaming music and TV.
“With you in mind, we’ve designed something fresh and different,” Senko continued, “and we couldn’t be more excited to share it. Today we’re introducing Canada’s first 5G subscription phone service.”
What do the plans mean?
Public Mobile has turned its five prepaid plans into a new subscription model. The pricing is still the same, with unlimited talk and text included in all plans and two offering 5G speeds.
Of course, the big difference from other prepaid cell phone plans is that these are renewable subscriptions. The 50GB, 25GB, and 30GB (4G) plans offer both 30-day and 90-day subscriptions. (The 90-day subscription offers savings of $15, $10, or $5 per month, depending on the plan.)
- 50GB data (5G) = $80/mo. or $65 for a 90-day subscription
- 25GB data (5G) = $65/mo. or $55 for a 90-day subscription
- 30GB data (4G) = $50/mo. or $45 for a 90-day subscription
- 15GB data (4G) = $45/mo.
- 20GB data (4G) = $39/mo. (special price)
All plans still come with unlimited talk and text Canada-wide.
The 5G subscription allows wireless customers to choose the speed plan and premium features they want. Then customers set up billing on a monthly recurring basis or for a 90-day subscription.
The company also offers add-ons through the app that include U.S. roaming (talk, text, and data), U.S. roaming data only, additional Canada data, and long-distance minutes. All add-ons expire after 15 or 30 days.
Public Mobile notes in its press release that the prepaid plans include “no overage fees, no credit checks, no confusing contracts and no surprises.” The company wants to compete with other prepaid brands like Lucky Mobile (from Bell) and Chatr Mobile (from Rogers).
With Telus and Public Mobile launching a subscription service to rival other no-contract plans, it won’t be long before Rogers and Bell follow.
