LG has announced one of their next smartphones – the LG Optimus Sol. Hardware-wise the Optimus Sol is far from unimpressive. A single-core 1GHz CPU won’t turn too many heads, but it’s still a fast and solid processor for a smartphone. 512MB of RAM should be enough to handle most multitasking and a 5MP camera is pretty standard for today’s smartphone market.
So what’s so special about this phone? Sure, it’s specs aren’t terrible, but they’re far from big news in today’s market.
The 3.8 inch display on the Optimus Sol is what LG is calling “Ultra AMOLED”. Although resolution is still just 480 x 800 (the same as a Samsung Galaxy S II), the U-AMOLED display has a two fold advanced reflection rate when compared to standard AMOLED screens. What this basically means is that image quality outdoors will be significantly improved over traditional AMOLEDs.
This doesn’t sound like much of a big deal, but it’s actually great news. Even phones as advanced as the Samsung Galaxy S II have trouble with screen visibility outdoors. If LG has figured out a way to drastically counter this problem then we look forward to seeing it in action and, hopefully, wide-spread adoption by other manufacturers.
Other specs for the Optimus Sol invlude 2GB internal memory, expandable MicroSD slot, Quad-band GSM connectivity and a-GPS, all running on Android 2.3 Gingerbread.
