Intel has been “coming” to smartphones for such a long time now that it’s difficult to remember when it all started. The NVIDIA and Qualcomm dominated field of mobile computer processor chips has been ripe for competition by the world’s most well-known CPU manufacturer and it looks like Intel is finally entering the fray… with Lenovo.
You heard us. Lenovo, hot on the heals of its Android 4.0 TV announcement, has shown off a new Android 4.0 smartphone powered by an Intel chip at CES in Vegas.
The Lenovo K800 is all set to be the very first Intel-powered smartphone, but that’s not the only impressive piece of hardware news we’ve heard about it. A 4.5 inch screen with 720p HD display is going to be available as well. There's also an 8MP rear camera with dual LED flash and a single-core Intel 1.6GHz processor. Other than that there’s really not much else to tell right now other than that the phone is apparently going to be first available in China (much like the Lenovo K91 Smart TV) and then in the rest of the world at a later and currently undisclosed date.
Whatever this device turns out like we’re extremely interested to see if Intel has been able to create a power-efficient mobile chip, as traditionally that has definitely been one of the company’s weaker points. Of course we’re also keen to find out about this new Lenovo phone, despite its currently uninspired moniker, and we’ll definitely keep our eye out for more news on the subject.
