Apple has finally announced the official press event for the iPad 3. On the March 7th Apple press event the world will finally get its first look at the next instalment of the tablet series that created a global market.

So what do we know so far? Not much, really. We’ve heard semi-confirmation of a 2048 x 1536 retina display for the 9.7 inch screen but other than that we still only really have conjecture to go on.

We’ve heard tell of 4G LTE compatibility and a larger battery. LTE wouldn’t be a surprise considering the way the US market is going and that countries like the UK and Australia are already implementing their own fledgling LTE networks.

Of course we won’t be surprised if Apple turns up with an iPad 3 sporting a quad-core processor. Quad-cores are becoming the new standard for the next generation of devices and, while there aren’t really any apps that require them yet, Apple has never really been one to fall too far behind when it comes to flexing its hardware.

There’s some interesting information to be gleaned from the press invitation at the top right of this post, however. Firstly the clarity of the screen definitely supports the retina display information we obtained, but that was barely in question.

If you’ll look more closely you may have noticed that there is no home button underneath the model’s hand. This could be because the tablet is being used in landscape mode, or because Apple has finally done away with the Home button. This is a rumor that has been around since pre-iPad2 days. A long time ago (long in tech standards) Apple was showing off some of its fancy buttonless gesture controls. The idea being that instead of a button Apple could offer a more streamlined experience by adding multi-finger gestures utilising up to 5 digits. At the time Apple claimed that it was all in the name of research and that there were no plans to implement this new interface over the classic Home button, but the rumor persisted.

You may have also noticed that the rim along the edge of the device is much darker than the silver aluminum rear plate that we’re seen on the iPad and iPad 2. Of course this could be a trick of the light, but it definitely appears that that iPad 3 has taken to a starker design than its forebears.

We’ve been hearing talk of folks reporting that iPad 3 shipments are already under way. This could mean that we’ll be seeing the iPad 3 on shelves very quickly after its release. Let’s hope this time Apple managed to manufacture enough units to meet the immediate demand of its fans and not keep those of us less-hardcore customers waiting for the next shipment.
