According to a report by the Taiwan Economic News, Apple has secured two new manufacturers to supply battery packs for the upcoming iPad 3. These new packs are reportedly thinner than lighter than anything Apple has used before in its iPad tablets.
Tech sites such as PhoneArena have speculated that this could mean that the iPad 3 as a whole will be thinner and lighter than the iPad 2. If true this would hardly be surprising, given Apple’s traditional approach to physical design, as well as a need to compete with Samsung’s Galaxy Tablet line, who’s profile is also becoming increasingly slim.
There is also another possibility. Apple could require the extra room left by these new battery packs in order to fit in a retina display for the iPad 3. Such a display would put Apple significantly ahead of the competition in terms of screen resolution, a tactic that has already been proven successful with the iPhone 4.
Unfortunately these battery packs also cost around 20-30% more than the last versions used in the iPad 2’s construction. This could mean a decent price bump for iPad 3 customers, as battery packs don’t come cheap.
