Earlier this week we did a post about how HTC could be the first manufacturer with a quad-core handset in reference to leaked information about the HTC Edge. Now information is starting to hit the web about quad-core research being conducted by LG, Samsung and Motorola, all of whom are trying to be the first on the market with the next gen of super-phones.
All four manufacturers (including HTC) have reportedly added NVIDIA’s new Tegra 3 CPU chip to their line-ups.
There’s plenty of time in which HTC, Samsung, LG and Motorola can switch places in the quad-core race, as HTC is apparently set to release the Edge sometime around April or March 2012.
Just what other kind of hardware will support these new chips is anyone’s guess. It wouldn’t be outside the realm of believability to expect some upgraded cameras, more RAM, higher res screens, Android 4.0 and maybe even some new stuff we haven’t heard about yet.
Whoever ends up winning mightn’t ultimately matter anyway. The title of first smartphone with a dual-core arguably went to the LG Optimus 2X or Motorola Atrix, both of which are being outdone in sales by other dual-core devices such as the Samsung Galaxy S II line. One thing we’re definitely hoping for is an increased focus on graphics, as that seems to be the biggest hardware issue we’ve had with graphically demanding games and apps so far, rather than any real problems with CPU power.
But it’s still exciting to think about all that power crammed in to a phone that’s just sitting calmly in our pocket. It kind of reminds you of that old MicroBee computer your parents had in the spare room when you were a kid... Well, maybe that’s just us.
