Some snapshots of the HTC Edge have made their way on to the web along with some already wide-spread rumors that it will be HTC’s very first quad-core phone. Interestingly enough the rumors state that the Edge will be sporting a quad-core Nvidia Tegra 3 chip, rather than a Qualcomm CPU.

Pocketnow reports that their source made mention of a 4.7 inch display with (hopefully) 720p resolution, 1GB of RAM and an 8MP camera with HTC’s new 28mm f/2.2 lens to improve shots in low-lit areas.

As far as the CPU goes we’re apparently looking at a quad-core 1.5GHz processor. That’s double the speed of the HTC Rezound/Sensation XE, both of which are currently HTC’s fastest devices.

We also expect to see Beats Audio integration, much like with the Rezound and Sensation XE, not only on the HTC Edge but just about all of HTC’s top-tier phones from now on.

No mention of a release date has been made mention of yet, but we’re pretty certain this new superphone would at least be waiting until it could hit the market with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich (assuming, somewhat safely, that this is an Android device) out of the box.

There’s not really that much else to say at this point other than on the applicability of a quad-core CPU in a smartphone. Right now dual-core CPUs often feel a little unnecessary, as not too many apps that make full use of them have been released in to the market. Do you think that a quad-core CPU is unnecessary at this point, or are you just excited about yet another step forwards in awesome consumer technology?
