Prominent smartphone leak specialists agree that Google will end its own efforts to design and sell phones and replace it with Google Play Editions of popular handset models, known as Android Silver.

Blogger @evleaks recently tweeted that Google won’t be releasing any more Nexus-branded products, a statement in line with prominent Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin who also believes there will be no Nexus in 2015.

Both bloggers have an exceptional track record for knowing about upcoming handset releases well in advance of the official statement from the manufacturers, with @evleaks recently outing the new Motorola Moto E before its unveiling.

What comes next?

In the place of the Nexus line, these tipsters believe Google will focus its efforts on Android Silver, a project to market Google Play Editions of popular smartphone models. These special releases will ship with a clean version of the latest Android installed, rather than the manufacturer’s software.

The upcoming LG G3 is tipped to be the first Android Silver handset, but if the Google Play Edition phones from last year are indication, we should expect to see Android Silver versions of the Galaxy S5 and HTC One M8, too.

Importantly, the rumour mill is suggesting that Google is working with carriers to make sure Android Silver devices are sold through channels other than the Google Play store. Adding the option to buy a Silver device on contract should do a lot towards raising awareness, and sales, of these phones.
