The first 4G LTE enabled smartphone on Verizon’s network, the HTC ThunderBolt, is soon to finally receive the Android Gingerbread update. The news comes as welcome relief to ThunderBolt users across the nation who have been waiting for the update since HTC accidentally leaked the information about a Gingerbread update around 4 months ago.
It’s great news that this pioneer phone is finally getting its just desserts, as it seems somewhat silly having blazing fast internet speeds on a device with a less-than optimal operating system (OS). While the HTC ThunderBolt does come running the more than satisfactory Android 2.2 Froyo out of the box, it’s high time that Verizon’s first 4G customers were rewarded with an OS update.
Along with speed boosts, battery management upgrades and even browsing efficiency improvements we hope to see some tweeks to the Sense user interface (UI). We’d also love to see some Gingerbread 2.3.4 GTalk video support, but as yet we have no idea if the ThunderBolt will be seeing 2.3.4 or 2.3.3. The only real difference here being that 2.3.4 has video support for GTalk (essentially Android’s answer to FaceTime) and 2.3.3 does not.
We’ll be sure to keep you updated on this as more news starts to roll out. Until then keep your eyes tuned on this spot.
