Fido Launches Three Low-Cost Data-Only Plans

Fido becomes the third major national carrier to release postpaid data-only smartphone plans that brought to the market in an effort to provide accessibility and options to lower-income Canadians. While they don't have the best value options, they do offer the most with three choices ranging from 250MB to 1GB of monthly data.

Every plan includes a phone number for texting, but if you need to call then all incoming or outgoing calls are charged at $1.00 per minute. That's higher than the $0.60/minute from Koodo and Virgin Mobile's data-only plans. 9-1-1 emergency calls aren't charged.

While Koodo and Virgin Mobile only offer a 1GB plan, Fido offers more. The 250MB plan costs only $15/month, the 500MB plan costs $25/month and the 1GB plan is $30/month. All plans include Canada-wide text, picture and video messaging on the Fido network. Additional data is $10 for every 100MB block of data so make sure to enable data warnings and limits on your smartphone. Fido will send you texts when you're approaching (and when you hit) your monthly data limit but they won't stop letting you download.

Since Fido offers the most options, they're the best choice when you need to change plans frequently. Switching between the 250MB plan and the 1GB plan for months when you know you'll need more data is as simple as contacting Fido's customer support or logging into your account through the website.

Third-tier national networks like Chatr and Public Mobile also offer data-only plans, but they're prepaid and are limited in customer service. Regional carriers like Freedom Mobile offer some of the best per-gigabyte data-only plans in Canada and low $0.05/minute talk time, but service can be limited outside major urban centres in Ontario, BC and Alberta.
