They say you don't get something for nothing, but this an old adage that the team at FreedomPop don't seem to have heard before.
To celebrate its first anniversary, FreedomPop has launched a brand new plan with one option priced at $0 per month, and in return they will give you 200-minutes, 500 text messages and 500MB data.
If you'd like more talk, text or data there are a few other options, including a plan for $10.99 per month, which includes unlimited calls and text plus the same 500MB data. If you need more data you can pay for it as you use for 2.5c per MB.
So, is there a catch?
If you've heard about FreedomPop before, you'll know they do business a little differently to other telcos. For starters, you have to buy a FreedomPop phone, which is currently an HTC Evo Design. These handsets are refurbished models and cost $99 outright.
They are also pre-loaded with FreedomPop software which directs calls to VoiP services rather than using traditional cell networks. The trick is to get its customers used to connecting to Wi-Fi at home and work to keep the cost of calls to a minimum. When you're not on Wi-Fi, the phone falls back to the Sprint network for coverage.
