The HTC BoomBass is a little Bluetooth speaker that pretty much just acts as a mini sub-woofer for your phone. It pairs via NFC and works with any app that requires sound. Right now you can only use it with the HTC One, One Mini and One Max.

The phones themselves keep on playing sound through their awesome Boomsound speakers. All the BoomBass does is add a little bass.

The change in quality is surprisingly huge, considering it’s just a tiny little box, but to really get a good experience you’ll want bassy tunes. Acoustic music does benefit, but to a lesser-extent.

You’ll also be restricted to using in indoors. It’s strange, but even though the bass seems loud when you’re sitting at a desk, the instant you take it outside you lose everything. You can still hear the HTC One’s loud speakers, just not the BoomBass. The same thing happens when you fill up a room with people; it just gets drowned out. So it’s not a gadget for a picnic or party, but if all you want is some better tunes when you’re working or studying then it should definitely help you out.

While it will pair with non-HTC phones, it doesn’t actually ‘work’. Instead of augmenting the sound with a little added bass, the Boombass will totally take over delivering all audio. This ends up making your device sound like it’s trapped in a car or behind a wall.

As for the price, it’s expected to be around $100. Considering its limited use, we don’t think we could justify that spend. If it ends up being a bit cheaper, say $40-$60, then we could definitely see the BoomBass being picked up by fans of the HTC One family.
