Google releases an official YouTube app for Firefox OS, giving a tick of approval to the new kid on the smartphone block.
Last year in July we reported that Firefox had started working on its very own mobile Firefox OS. Rather than an Android UI skin, or anything else designed to run in tandem with a pre-existing mobile OS, Firefox OS is a new ground-up operating system aimed at providing direct competition in the lower ends of the smartphone market, specifically the prepaid market.
Mozilla has revealed that it will soon be releasing its own HTML5-centric mobile OS. Once known as Boot to Gecko, the now-rebranded Firefox OS will focus on promoting openness and innovation through an open source approach that is aimed entirely at HTML5 developers. Sound familiar? It should; it’s a very similar approach taken by Google back when it launched Android, except that Firefox will be focusing on HTML5 rather than Java or Flash.
