Canadians looking for a budget-friendly, entry-level device should keep an eye on Bell. The carrier is already stocking several lower priced Alcatel and Samsung phones, and reports reveal it is about to add devices from up-and-coming company ZTE to its smartphone range.
The ZTE Grand X is the manufacturer’s new mid-range handset, and is set to be first ZTE smartphone to be released in Canada. Bell will be selling the Grand Z exclusively from July 29 onwards, with a no-contract outright price tag of $149.95.
The Grand X features a 5-inch, 720p display and runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean. The device is powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, and includes a 2400mAh battery. Camera-wise, expect a 5MP rear camera and 1MP front-facing camera.
ZTE's new device comes with HSPA+ connectivity, but apparently won’t be LTE-capable. However, as far as affordable entry-level devices go, the Grand X is attractively priced at just $150 – while it’s not exactly a sensational first entry into the Canadian smartphone market from ZTE, it’s a respectable one.
The company may be new to Canadian consumers, but ZTE is already a well-established brand in its native China. The Canadian launch of the Grand X is part of ZTE’s recent push into international markets including the US, UK and Australia.
Although the Grand X will be the first ZTE smartphone to make its way up north, ZTE has previously released feature phones in the Canadian market, via small carriers such as Fido and Chat-r Wireless.
