Windows Phone 7 is about to get its first major update: Mango. Until now there have been nothing but minor bug fixes released for the WP7 platform so when we heard about the Mango update we were understandably excited.
Windows Phone 7 has the makings of a solid and fantastic mobile operating system (OS), but as it stands it gives a bit of an unfinished feel when it comes to functionality. Sure, the elegant appearing UI and funkily unique Start screen give the impressive of a polished product, but the truth of it is that WP7 is still in its infancy and as such has a tendency to fall down every once in a while.
It's by no means an insult to Microsoft or the WP7 platform itself to say this. The same could have been (and was) said about the iOS and Android platforms when they first came out. Android especially was slow, jerky and lacked any kind of substantial app support. By comparison Windows Phone 7 is actually quite good to Android's and iOS's clumsy pasts, unfortunately that doesn't negate the fact that there's quite a bit of catching up to do.
What's New With Windows Phone 7 Mango?
The Mango update has a few changes planned that should increase WP7's appeal and hopefully (although we cannot confirm this part) fix many of the issues we've taken with it.
The new items Mango adds to the menu are:
- Facebook Chat
- Office 365
- Sky Drive
- Share Point
Improved games hub and Xbox integration.
There's not too much detailed info available as yet, except that we know the Xbox hub is being given an "Automatic Sync" option. There will also be a minor change to the media player, where users will now view the display art of whatever album they're currently playing, although this feature has been standard in other media devices for some time now.
That's it for now, but we're sure to hear more as the release approaches. If you're interesting in hearing more about the Mango update stay tuned for more goss.
