For any of you who don’t remember Windows Mobile it was the mobile platform employed by Microsoft in the days before the Windows Phone 7 platform came in to existence. Generally seen to be aimed at Industry consumers, it was never really able to compete with BlackBerry, a service that at the time had something akin to a monopoly in that area of the market.
We won’t go in to the various reasons that Windows Mobile was ultimately unsuccessful but anyone still running the Windows Mobile 6 OS (or anything earlier) should be warned that come June 15th in the US the Windows Mobile marketplace is closing its doors.
As far as continuing support goes pre-existing customers will still be able to purchase apps and games. However, there will be no new apps submitted, no new updates released and (we can assume) somewhat less online supervision of the service.
Anyone with a My Phone syncing service should also consider moving to SkyDrive, as My Phone is facing a similar fate in early August.
For most people this news isn’t concerning, but we thought we’d just let our Windows Mobile readership know that we haven’t forgotten about them just yet.
