WhistleOut fast facts
  • Wireless customers across Canada are experiencing service disruptions, with texts and phone calls not working on their devices.
  • Telus reported disruptions in eastern Canada on Tuesday, July 11, that impacted calls and texts.
  • On Thursday, July 13, Telus reported outages in western Canada, including British Columbia and Alberta.
  • Telus is one of Canada’s largest cell phone networks, and the company has been ranked highly for customer service.

Telus wireless customers nationwide have dealt with outages this week. On Tuesday, Telus noted outages in eastern Canada impacting calls and texts. (Problems were also occurring with the flanker brand Koodo.) Then, on Thursday, the outages migrated from eastern to western Canada, with Telus reporting outages in Alberta and British Columbia.

On July 11, during the first round of outages, a Telus spokesperson told MobileSyrup: “Our crews resolved the issue for the vast majority of affected customers this afternoon, and we continue to investigate the root cause. If anyone is still encountering intermittent service we recommend turning their airplane mode on and off.”

MobileSyrup found that customers were also facing home phone and internet connection issues.

Telus is typically well-known for its great, reliable connection and customer service. As of writing, customers have reported outages for most of this week.

Energy outages could occur this summer too, and combining those with mobile outages could be devastating for the health and well-being of Canadians.

What should you do during an outage?

If you think you’re dealing with an outage from your mobile provider, contact customer service. It’s easy to contact Telus customer service and tell them what’s happening in your area. The more people who contact Telus, the better chance of a faster response.

During a mobile outage, you may still have internet service, and you can use that to place calls, send text messages, and check the internet for status updates.

Rogers outage last year

The previous major Canadian outage was in 2022 with Rogers Communications. The outage impacted internet and mobile users nationwide, with ATMs, emergency services, and internet services down.

Rogers is the mobile carrier for 11 million Canadians, and its 2022 outage was the second major outage in less than a year. Rogers’ customers still report outages—even this week—but nothing as bad as last year’s outage.

Rogers merged with Shaw earlier this year.
