The web is buzzing today over a purported leaked photo of the upcoming iPad 3’s casing. As always with Apple rumors, we suggest you don’t put too much stock in this as it’s currently totally unsubstantiated. However, the images do convey some surprising information, should they turn out to be the real-deal.

Possible the most unexpected thing we took away from this news is that the casing houses an A6 processor which, according to The Verge, will not be a quad-core CPU. Now, we have no problems with Apple pulling back and focusing on something other than raw processing power, as we’ve said many times in the past. However, that doesn’t mean we ever expected Apple to risk falling behind in the spec-wars, especially considering the marketing value placed on processing power these days.

Other, less surprising changes are a larger battery, new cameras and a new display. iPad 2 fans were a little disappointed to see the same old resolution back when it was released a while back, so this is absolutely no surprise. There’s talk of the iPad 3 even sporting its very own Retina Display, which would put its resolution at an impressive minimum of 2048 x 1536 (above 1080p). This alone would be worth the larger battery which, should the dual-core rumor turn out to be true, would seem a little superfluous without a major upgrade to the screen and graphics.

So when are we going to see it and find out for ourselves? Well, the iPad 2 was announced on March 2nd and finally hit US shelves on March 11th of last year. If Apple hasn’t decided to mess with its release dates, as it certainly did with the iPhone 4S, then we’re hoping to see the iPad 3 somewhere around early-to-mid March.
