There’s been a stack of rumors circulating around the Interwebs concerning Sony’s upcoming Xperia phone, codenamed 'Honami'. The latest leak has appeared online this week, adding fuel to the speculation fire. If it's genuine, then Sony’s future flagship device is all about the camera.
Sony fansite Xperia Blog has released specs and images from a leaked system dump, supposedly taken from a Canadian carrier device with the model number C6906 that's believed to be the new Honami.
Camera
The feature that's really got tech fans excited is the camera Sony is reportedly including. According to the leaked info, the Honami’s camera will have a 20-megapixel sensor with Super Resolution algorithm, new effects and features including Timeshift mode (which allows users to ‘shift back in forth in time’ to find the best shot, similar to Burst mode), and the ability to record 4K video.
4K video includes a resolution of 4000 x 2000 with an aspect ratio of 2:1. Not many televisions or displays currently on the market are fully compatible with 4K resolution, so it’s assumed this feature (if it’s proved to be fact, not fiction) will take advantage of Sony increasing its range of 4K-supportive televisions in the near future.
Supposedly, Sony will also be including an 'augmented reality’ app with the camera, which allows users to add scenes and additional effects to photo and video (including, as shown in the above pic, dinosaurs).
The camera is rumored to be powered by Sony’s BIONZ engine, a unique image processor that enhances colour reproduction and clarity. It will also include a new programming interface to allow developers to create additional add-on features.
Other features
The leaked images also indicate some aesthetic tweaks to the interface and launcher, as well as new designs for applications such as the calculator, clock, notes and a new virtual keyboard.
The Walkman app has also apparently been redesigned, and will finally include full integration with Sony’s Music Unlimited streaming service.
Other rumoured specs for the Honami include:
- A Snapdragon 800 processor
- 2GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage and a microSD slot
- A 5-inch 'Triluminos' full HD display
If speculation about the display size is correct, it will mean the Honami is bigger than Sony’s Xperia Z, but still smaller than the 6.4-inch Xperia Z Ultra phablet.
Sony has sent out media invites to an event in Paris on July 4, leading to whispers that the new device will be unveiled on this date. Adding to talk of a Paris début for the phone are leaked snapshots, showing what’s supposedly the Honami with an Eiffel Tower screensaver.
If the rumors pan out, it’s anticipated that the Sony Honami will go on sale sometime later this year.
