After Microsoft’s expensive acquisition of Skype it was just a matter of time before we started to see the popular VoIP service start cropping up on Windows Phone devices. Now we can apparently start expecting to see some pretty deep Skype integration by the end of the year.
Reports are conflicting just when and how Skype will make its debut on the windows phone platform. Some are saying it’ll be an OTA update, others claim that it will come as part of Tango.
The smart money right now seems to be on the Windows Phone 8 update named “Apollo”. Apollo is bringing a large amount of changes and additions to the WinPho OS, so it would be an ideal time to introduce Skype to the actual OS, rather than just running it as a separate app slapped on top of everything else.
However it eventually happens we’re hoping it won’t be too much longer. Skype is a reliable and free service that makes internet communication just that much easier for a lot of people and, if all goes well, Windows Phone users should have it by the end of 2012.
