There’s a rumour circulating the web right now that come 2013 Samsung will ditch the Windows Phone platform and start pushing its very own Bada OS. Despite Samsungs claim that it has absolutely no intentions of picking up webOS and running with it on a “third time’s a charm” ideology, this rumour seems sketchy at best. There's also no mention of continued Android support, but we can't imagine Samsung turning their back on the Android platform.
Bada is a reliable OS, yes. It works well on the mid-to-low end Samsung Wave product line, but in reality we doubt it could viably compete with an OS like Windows Phone that has seen such rapid growth in a very short time. Moreover we’re entirely unconvinced that Bada could hold its own against the current industry giants like Android and iOS.
Bada simply does not have the app support or range of devices necessary to appeal to a world market in a time where cloud services are becoming the next big thing. Moving forward it will become increasingly important when purchasing a phone to grab one that other people you know own, or that is compatible with your own home’s technology. Instant messaging, cloud services and direct connectivity between like-devices (ie iOS devices talking to Apple computers, or Android devices talking to PCs) are all gaining prevalence in the gadget industry.
So with an OS like Bada, that has only Samsung to back it and currently has little-to-no support, high-end customers who expect a similar cloud experience could be left standing out in the cold. Of course Samsung could have some big things planned and surprise us all, but right now we’re sceptical.
It is important to remember that this is a rumour and, right now, not one with too much to back it up. We’re definitely keen to see what Samsung decides to do, however. As a company Samsung is currently one of the market leaders in handset manufacturing and if there’s any huge shifts in focus planned we’re always excited to hear what they’ll be.
