Breaking news from The Unicode Consortium: brand-new emoji characters are coming your way soon.
The Emoji Subcommittee - which, believe it or not, is a real organization of emoji-reviewers - has accepted 77 emoji candidates this year, 72 of which will be hitting your smartphone in the Unicode 9.0 release.
What this means is that, come June 21, a whole new bunch of tiny in-text pictures will be available for your messaging pleasure.
Bacon, babies, and black hearts
The new emojis will likely show up in iOS 10 (for Apple users) and the as-yet unnamed Android. You’ll get new faces, objects, animals, food and more, including many long-awaited additions such as the selfie, the facepalm and the ‘puke’ face.
Also included is a ‘shrug’ emoji, which will provide much-needed convenience for the many phone owners tired of copy-and-pasting the ¯\_(?)_/¯ emoticon.
The full list of shiny new options is available at Emojipedia, but other icons you can look forward to: a fox face, an owl, a shark, a pregnant lady, a black heart, an avocado, and bacon.
You'll also enjoy a new cucumber/pickle icon, which will definitely not replace the eggplant as the platform’s most deliberately misused emoji. What a time to be alive.
