AT&T wasn't lying when it said that the Nokia Lumia 900 would be its biggest launch even to date, taking over all of Time Square with massive displays, a huge concert and thousands of shouting audience members. The show was definitely visually impressive and received a massive turnout with the square seeing shoulder-to-shoulder crowds and totally packed streets.
It’s not particularly clear just what famous pop-singer Nicki Minaj has to do with Nokia or its new Lumia 900 smartphone but the crowd didn’t really seem to care. Nokia seems to have spared no expense with some very cool effects running up and down the sides of buildings on what look like gigantic LED displays.
The tagline for the release is “the smartphone beta test is over”, inferring that every smartphone that has ever come before was just a test model designed for user feedback so that the Lumia 900 could be made without any flaws. Of course it’s just another marketing angle, but we have to admit that it’s a good one. The advertisement starring comedian Chris Parnell of Anchorman, SNL and Archer fame is well written and actually pretty funny, even taking some time out in the middle to subtly compare anyone that doesn’t own a smartphone to the Amish.
So far we've been very pleased with Nokia's new Windows Phone offerings. The matching of solid hardware, stylish design and Microsoft's new mobile OS is looking like it's just what was needed to get Nokia back in the game with a fighting chance.
If you're unfamiliar with the Lumia 900 it's basically an upsized and upgraded version of the Nokia Lumia 800. It sports a large 4.3 inch AMOLED ClearBlack display, 8MP camera and most importantly it supports AT&T's new 4G LTE network for lightning-fast mobile broadband. Unfortunately it is exclusive to AT&T right now, so customers from other carriers will have to wait. But overall it's a good sign of better things to come from Nokia and we're keen to see what's next with the impending release of Windows Phone 8.
