On the back of its Moto X announcement today, Motorola has also announced a new way to buy the phone, with the chance to customise the handset on the assembly line.
Motomaker is a new e-commerce site run by Motorola where customers can customize their phones with colored backplates and trim, add a short message to the back of the phone and boot-screen, choose wallpapers and purchase color-coordinated accessories, like headphones.
But perhaps the most important part of the Motomaker site is the option to double the storage capacity of the handset, doubling its 16GB storage to 32GB for an extra $50. This is important because the phone doesn't have a microSD card slot and the four telcos selling the Moto X (AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile) will only stock 16GB variants.
Luckily, the custom backplate covers are not just fluoro colors, with several textured shades of white and black, too. Motorola even showed off prototype wooden covers, though these won't be available at launch.
Motorola says that orders taken on the Motomaker site will have a four-day turn around, including delivery. The company is also making a lot of noise about the fact that the customized phones will be assembled in Fort Worth, Texas, which is great news for customers concerned about working conditions in Asia.
One other factor to keep in mind is that phones ordered in the first wave of Motomaker shipments will all be sold on the AT&T network. Other carriers are expected later.
The phone maker isn't quite ready to take your orders yet, with a 'register your interest' page only live today.
