Motorola has joined the dual-core smartphone revolution, following in the footsteps of the LG Optimus 2X.

Motorola’s new super-powered toy, the Motorola Atrix, will hit the world market in late February and is sure to make a splash. Powered by Android 2.2 (Froyo) the dual-core chipset makes short work of just about any task you’d think to throw at it. The Atrix is also promised to have HSPA+ support in the US and, in America, looks like it will be available exclusively to AT&T customers.

However, there’s far more to this new gadget than an impressive CPU. The Atrix sports a stunning 960 x 540 QHD display, a solid build, intensive graphical capabilities and more awesome peripherals than you’d bother to wave a stick at.

Where the Motorola Atrix really shines is its versatility. The dual-core processor might seem a bit excessive for a phone, but when you take in to account the amazing range of function Motorola has given the Atrix you might start to wonder why they didn’t try to cram more power in.

The Webtop App

Motorola has implemented  what they’re calling the Webtop App. This app allows users to essentially turn their Atrix in to a desktop computer, via the use of one simple and relatively small docking station. The purpose of the dock is to relay information between the phone and your regular computer peripherals (mouse, keyboard, screen etc) and literally allows the Atrix to act as a removable PC.

Motorola Atrix Laptop Dock

The interface itself is highly reminiscent of Apple’s OS-X operating system, but also comes with support for Citrix remote desktop. This essentially allows access to Windows XP as well, for all those enterprise minded folk who are in the market for a phone with Microsoft Office compatibility.

The best part about the whole affair is that Webtop saves your sessions in between docks. So you can take your phone from one setup to another without losing anything that you were doing. Now is that innovative or what?

Not only does the Atrix act as a passable desktop computer, but via the use of a laptop dock you can also make this full computer experience portable. Motorola has demonstrated a super-thin laptop that you simply plug your phone in to the back of for on-the-go access to Webtop. The reason the laptop is so thin is because it doesn’t need half the internals you would usually need to a portable computer, as its brains are totally located within the Motorola Atrix itself.

Video Playback

As far as visual media functions go the Atrix has also managed to impress with ease. Via the aforementioned HD Dock users can watch videos stored in the Atrix itself on a screen of just about any size with fantastic quality. There’s even a remote for those who want to make use of this function in their living rooms.

The WhistleOut Opinion

This is by far the most innovative and exciting news we’ve heard from the mobile phone world this year. With another 11 months left to go in 2011 it’s really starting to heat up in the mobile market. At this rate it’s just about anyone’s guess the kind of stuff we’ll be looking at as we approach 2012. Bad Roland Emmerich movies and scary Mayan prophecies notwithstanding, now is definitely an exciting time for the tech market.
