Well the hoopla over the iPhone 4S is starting to die down now and it seems it’s about time to get back in to the iPhone 5 rumor business. The latest goss we’re starting to hear about the place is that Apple is currently testing out quad-core applicability, as well as considering upping the res on the iPhone 5 to 720p.
Both rumors appear to have originated from the German Mac rumor site Macerkopf, but it’s hard to tell with iPhone gossip.
We certainly don’t doubt that Apple would be toying around with quad-core CPUs, especially with the talk we’ve been hearing about HTC moving in that direction with the HTC Zeta and HTC Edge. Not to mention the fact that we’ve heard whispered mutterings about similar quad-core devices on their way from LG, Samsung and Motorola. If Apple doesn’t adopt a quad, or even penta-core design it’s entirely possible that the next iPhone could be seen as woefully underpowered compared to the competition.
We find the notion that Apple is considering upping the resolution on the iPhone to 720p to be intriguing for 2 reasons:
- Apple has always stated that there is no reason to up the resolution of its retina display, as the average human eye apparently already can’t detect its pixels at normal viewing distances. However, with an increasing number of phones claiming “HD” screens with the 720p tagline, Apple may be considering this move simply to compete in the marketing department.
- Conversely, a bump up to 720p could lend credence to some rumors we heard about the iPhone 5 back before the iPhone 4S was released. These particular rumors focused around the size of the screen, specifically that it would be seeing a bump from the traditional 3.5 inches up to 4. This in itself leads on to even more conjecture, like the possibility of Apple ditching its single Home button in order to accommodate a larger screen without significantly increasing the size of the device.
As always with iPhone 5 rumous one leads to another and to another. We inevitably find ourselves in a complex web of guess work and rumor that’s ultimately supported by no solid evidence. But it’s still fun to get amongst the flurry of gossip every once in a while, if only to see if you’re right once the product is finally announced.
