HTC Chairwoman Cher Wang is reported to have told China’s Economic Observer that HTC as a company is considering buying a mobile operating system (OS) of its very own. If true, there are a few interesting possibilities here in HTC’s future.
We can certainly see the appeal that HTC might have for making this move. With Nokia siding exclusively with Windows Phone, Google purchasing Motorola Mobility and Samsung rumored to being dropping Windows Phone support in 2013 in favor of pushing its own Bada OS, HTC might be worried about being one of the only top-end manufacturers without its own OS.
This of course raises the question of which OS will HTC buy? Of course there’s already a tonne of speculation over the possibility of an HTC/webOS future now, after HP recently announced that it would be ceasing all webOS operations in the future. Could HTC finally be the one company that is both big and smart enough to give webOS the kind of support it deserves?
It’s probably more likely that HTC will seek a cheaper solution, however. HTC’s biggest Android competitor – Samsung – tends to focus its own Bada OS on mid-to-lower end devices. It’s a cheaper alternative for a manufacturer to run a budget line on an OS that it need not pay royalties for, as profits from the devices themselves are comparatively low to the market-leading handsets like the HTC Sensation or Galaxy S II.
However, HTC hasn’t even confirmed these plans yet, let alone started making any suggestions of what direction it may take. Until then we’ll just have to be content with conjecture and hearsay.
