Apple has posted a pretty inspiring story on its website showing how a deaf travel blogger uses an iPad and a number of apps to navigate the world.
Cherie King is a travel blogger who writes for a hearing-impaired audience who might be keen to travel as much as she does, but who find the prospect of exploring new cities daunting. Through her blog, Flight of the Travel Bee, King shares her exotic journeys and hopes to encourage others to follow in her footsteps. To date, King has travelled to 5 continents and has visited 31 countries.
Though King doesn’t namedrop her travelling equipment in her blog posts, Apple has put together a great list of the apps she uses on iOS devices to help her find new places to visit and making getting around easier once she arrives.
A number of these apps are exactly what you would expect an intrepid travelling to have installed: Tripadvisor, Apple Maps, iTranslate and Wordpress for updating her blog. But there are some really interesting inclusions too.
Picture Dictionary by BabelDeck is a great idea. For all of those time when a translation tool just won’t cut it, Picture Dictionary can step in and help you find what you are looking for. Anything you need, you can look up and point to — a great idea. This writer remembers a dicey day in Bangkok when the picture of a toilet could have been very handy at the time.
King also uses an app called Airports by TravelNerd, which details all of the amenities in major airports, and has a colour-coded map for each.
In fact, despite King being deaf herself, her blog is a great read for anyone considering an escape for the normalcy of the Western World. It’s beautifully written and littered with a tonne of gorgeous photos — most of which she has taken with her iPhone 5.
