If it seems like only yesterday that iOS 5 was finally released with all its upgraded notification/integration splendor then that’s because you’re not far off the mark. In the short time since iOS 5’s release Apple has not only had to hastily release the 5.0.1 patch to fix some pretty varying battery-life issues, but also begin some even hastier work on 5.0.2 to fix the issues that were created or worsened by the introduction of 5.0.1.
If you haven’t been keeping up with it all then we’ll bring you up to speed. Most of the issues revolved around certain bits of iOS 5’s software causing way too much of a drain on the battery, both when in use and even when not in use. The 5.0.1 patch was supposed to fix all of that, but in some cases ended up making the problem even worse, although many users reported their issues to be fixed by the patch.
Now there are reports coming in that Apple will be forced to delay the release of the 5.0.2 patch due to memory leaks within the code. This is fair enough, seeing as the last thing Apple needs right now is another update fiasco caused by scrambling to push it out as fast as possible, but all those users suffering from the 5.0.2 blues certainly aren’t going to be happy to hear this.
Hopefully once this is all done and dusted Apple will actually have improved the battery life on its iPhone 4S devices up to the 10 hours of active use that was projected for the 5.0.1 patch. 10 hours of active use/8 hours of 3G phone calls/6 hours of web surfing and up to 10 hours of video playback would be pretty impressive for such a powerful device. Let’s hope Apple gets it right this time around.
