Nokia’s first and final handset to run on the Meego operating system – the Nokia N9 – sparked worldwide interest when it was discovered that, despite low expectations, it was actually a responsive and intuitive device with a range of innovative functionality. Sadly, it will apparently not be coming to America.
Anyone outside of America still has a good chance of receiving it, especially those customers in Europe.
It really is a shame that the N9 won’t ever make its debut on the sunny shores of the US smartphone market, but at least US customers can take this as a possible sign that they will receive the upcoming Nokia Windows Phone as soon as possible.
With the N9 Nokia finally demonstrated an understanding of what the smartphone market in general has been wanting for a long time. The phone industry switched from a hardware to a software focus some time ago. While hardware is certainly still important, Apple, Android and even Windows Phone have demonstrated that what customers are most interested in is the user interface (UI), the responsiveness of the device and the range of functionality.

Of course, all of these features are tied in with hardware, as the more powerful a handset is the more attractive the interface, the more responsive the commands and the wider the range of functionality is that can be provided. But at the end of the day it’s how well your software runs on the hardware you have that impresses the market; not the other way around.
Nokia, in partnership with Meego, demonstrated an ability to not only understand this concept but deliver upon it with the Nokia N9. It was a tremendous step in the right direction for the struggling Finnish giant; one that will hopefully be followed up in great strides with the Nokia/Microsoft partnership that is fast approaching fruition.
The Nokia N9 certainly renewed our faith in Nokia’s ability to deliver and as such we’re truly excited to see what Nokia can do with the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango platform coming some time in (hopefully) September.
What do you think? Would you have preferred to see what the N9 can do for yourself? Or are you more keen to see if Nokia can re-enter the market with a bang on the Windows Phone platform?
