A new iPad has arisen, yet this time it seems like only one thing has been changed: storage. What we’ll hopefully end up calling the “iPad 4th Generation, 128GB” comes with, you guessed it, a whopping 128GB of on-board storage.

Other than that the only other addition is the new price tag of US$799 for the WiFi-only version and US$929 for the full 4G LTE model. Some readers may recognise how close that price tag is to the US$999 of an 11-inch Macbook Air.

The release is being ridiculed by many who claim the 128GB of storage space useless, as most people prefer cloud storage these days. But we don’t think that’s necessarily true. While cloud storage certainly has been increasing in popularity, many casual users still find the process confusing and prefer traditional storage methods.

Rather than storing only a few episodes or movies at a time, 128G iPad users should be able to store entire seasons without issue, reducing the amount of upkeep required to maintain fresh media on your device and increasing the amount of content that one can take with them while travelling.

Of course we don’t expect this new iPad to overtake its predecessors in sales, but we can certainly see a market for it, especially with the more video-focused user market.

We’re still not entirely sure what prompted the release. It could be designed to compete with the Microsoft Surface, it could simply be a response to general trends in the market or maybe Apple just figured they’d try it out and see what happened.

Whatever the reasons the iPad 4th Generation 128GB is here and we don’t think it should encounter too many problems. While it’ll likely be the least popular of the iPad devices, it’s still likely to pull in more of its own customers than it cannibalises from its iPad siblings.
