Samsung will challenge Apple’s iPhone launch by releasing its high-end Galaxy Alpha handset at the same time.

According to a report from Korean paper ETNews, Samsung’s long-rumoured all-metal Galaxy Alpha (formerly known as the Galaxy Prime) will hit store shelves next month, and that this timing could be a pre-emptive strike to stifle Apple’s plans to launch the iPhone 6 in September.

Samsung is ready to ship Alpha units next month, to “select markets”, the ETNews report says.

The metal bodied Galaxy Alpha is rumoured to be a beefed up Galaxy S5, with improved performance and a redesigned appearance, but including all of the same features, like water resistance and a fingerprint scanner.

In contrast, the iPhone 6 is rumoured to include a larger display and a similar all-metal chassis. It will run on iOS 8, with a number of its new software features showcased during Apple’s WWDC event last month.
