Just a day after rumors surfaced that Apple could be working on a 12.9 inch iPad with a 2K resolution screen, that Samsung’s close to putting the finishing touches on its own 2K handset. As could be expected, this has led to calls from Android fans that this could be the Galaxy S5.
The rumor was sparked by a benchmark score that cropped up on website GFXBench, which appears to have subsequently been removed.
Hold your horses
The phone in question is called the Samsung SM-G900S, which is the first clue that what we’re looking at is not the next Galaxy S. Dating back to the original Galaxy S, Samsung’s flagship phone models have moved out from I9000. The S4 came in a variety of models like the I9500 and I9505.
The recent Galaxy Round, however, is called the G910S. The similarities between this and the mysterious SM-G900S suggest that it isn’t a Galaxy S device, but instead a prototype or niche device like the Round.
The only real evidence that we’re looking at the GS5 is the time of year. This is about the point where we’d expect leaks starting to surface about Samsung’s next flagship. The Galaxy S5 is expected between March and May next year, which is basically right around the corner. The Round on the other hand only just made its debut, and is unlikely to have a successor for another 8-10 months.
So is this the Galaxy S5?
Probably not. It’s still more likely that, if this information really is legit, what we’re looking at is an early prototype for Samsung’s 2K screen tech.
Ultimately we have a leaked device with a 2K screen and a model number similar to the Galaxy Round. Its CPU is powerful but not enough to set it apart from a marketing perspective and it’s running the latest Android 4.4 OS.
Once again the only evidence to suggest that it’s the GS5 is the time of year and that’s not enough to go by.
