At the recent WP keynote Microsoft announced that the first Nokia Windows Phone handset is on its way and it’ll be running on the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update.
This excites us for 2 main reasons:
1) The joint venture between Nokia and Microsoft appears to have been successful, despite some belief that it would fall through before any major release could be made.
2) The first Nokia WP device isn’t too far away. The Windows Phone Mango update is the next update about to be released by Microsoft. Announcing that the first Nokia WP device will run on this update means that we should definitely be seeing one some time soon.
The Mango update is apparently going to boast some significant upgrades over the base WP7 OS we’ve seen so far. This is great news, as the WP7 platform is a great basis on which to build a solid mobile OS, but so far hasn’t really been able to compete in terms of functionality.
Nokia’s move to the WP platform is fantastic particularly because Nokia’s biggest weakness has always been its operating systems, namely Symbian. Nokia has always had great hardware for their devices, so a partnership with an up-and-coming OS that is already better than Symbian ever was should hopefully provide consumers with another solid choice in the smartphone market. A choice that actually offers a different experience than Android or Apple currently can.
