Text Rogers Family Share Mobile Plans over image of a family using smartphones and tablets

Article Summary

Rogers offers a smaller selection of family sharing deals than their main competitors, Bell and Telus. That’s only because they roll more benefits into fewer smartphone plans. Each additional phone plan saves $20/month automatically.

Rogers Wireless is one of the only mobile carriers in Canada that lets you share your data plan with more than one phone line. Every smartphone plan gets a fixed amount of full-speed data followed by throttled (slowed) downloads for the rest of the billing month. If you add another smartphone plan to your account, all full-speed data plans combine into one shared data bucket.

The Rogers Smart Drive service that turned your car into a Wi-Fi hotspot has driven into the sunset, but they still offer a wide selection of tablets and Apple Watches for $0 down to give you even more mobility options.

Rogers Shared Data Plans Are Different (in a Good Way)

Bell and Telus offer discounts for adding more than one phone line to a single account, but you have to choose between:

  • Combining full-speed data caps into one big, shared data bucket
  • Each getting your own data caps, but data after that is unlimited at throttled speeds

Rogers is the only carrier in Canada
that lets you share full-speed data
and get unlimited data plans on the same plan

For example, if you have an Infinite +10 smartphone plan with Rogers then you get unlimited talk, text, and 10GB of high-speed LTE data every month. When you go over that data cap then you can keep downloading without extra charges but speeds will be slower. We have a full guide that details how unlimited data works in Canada.

When you add a second Infinite +10 line to the same account, you now share 20GB of data between both phones. This is great for a couple if one of you uses just a little data each month but the other streams Netflix on their commute each day. You won’t be charged data overages even when you use up that shared 20GB. You’ll both start using throttled (slowed) unlimited data until the end of your billing month.

Add A Data-only Device, Get More Data

One of the most economical ways to add mobile freedom to a family share plan is by putting a data-only device on your contract. You can add an LTE-enabled smartwatch or LTE tablet to any existing Rogers Infinite smartphone plan. If you don't have a qualifying device, Rogers offers a variety of tablets and smartwatches you can add to your monthly contract for $0 upfront.

Tablet Data Plan

Data plans cost $10-15/month when you have an Infinite smartphone plan. You don't get any additional bonus data, but you what you have on your existing plan gets shared with your tablet. This is an awesome solution when you already have two or three Infinite plans with Rogers and want to add a tablet for the car. The tablet taps into your existing Rogers data plan without draining battery life from your smartphone's hotspot.

If you don't have an LTE enabled tablet, Rogers will give you a basic Android tablet for $0 down and $15/month if you sign up for a 2-year contract. Some higher-quality tablets (like the new Apple iPad) require a financing plan starting around $25/month.

Smartwatch Data Plan

Gone are the days when you had to pair your Apple Watch to your iPhone in order to use apps. Today, Rogers connects your smartwatch directly to the internet with nationwide LTE network support for $15/month. Your smartwatch will draw from your mobile plan's data pool.

Why Get A Family Plan?

There are a lot of reasons to get a Family Share plan:

  • $20/month discount on all additional phone lines after the first one
  • Large, shareable data bucket provides one of the lowest cost-per-gigabyte options
  • All phone lines appear on one convenient bill
  • Add a tablet or smartwatch and all devices share the same data pack
  • Put kids, elderly parents or even friends on the plan. There's no rule that they need to be related to be on your "family" plan
  • Living far from home? Kids that have gone off to school and elderly parents living in another province can still share your account.
  • Take advantage of cheaper rates or more data in Manitoba, Saskatchewan or Quebec if a family member lives there
