Unlike its MVNO competitors, Freedom Mobile operates on its own network and hands the cost down to you, allowing you to grab 5G and 4G LTE plans for cheap.

When Freedom Mobile launched (originally as Wind Mobile), it disrupted the wireless industry by offering significantly more data than competitors at cheap rates, making it an excellent pick for students and bargain-hunters. Our current best Freedom Mobile plan picks are no exception:

  • The 5G Unlimited CA-US 100GB plan takes the top spot thanks to its 100GB of 5G data for just $55/month and its additional 20GB of Roam Beyond data.
  • The 5G Unlimited CA-US 50GB offers excellent value at just $35/month when you BYOD.
  • The 5G 10GB CA-US plan is one of the best basic plans in the country, with unlimited talk and text and 10GB of full-speed 5G data for $29/month when you BYOD.

How we picked the best Freedom Mobile plans

  • Price & value
We ensured you’re getting the most bang for your buck without sacrificing the essentials to keep you connected.
  • High-speed data
We looked at whether the amount of guaranteed “premium” data was reasonable for the plan price and flagged if you’re being overcharged for data you likely don’t need.
  • Coverage & network reliability
We evaluated each carrier’s nationwide 4G LTE and 5G coverage to predict your service quality (no dropped calls allowed!).
  • Plan extras and perks
If you get free Netflix or a hefty hotspot, we factored those in relative to the cost of the plan.

Best Freedom
Mobile plan

Freedom Mobile
4.5 out of 5 overall

5G Unlimited CA-US 100GB | $55/month

  • Pros: Tons of in-network data, large phone selection, 5G speeds
  • Cons: Expensive monthly payment, limited network

The 5G Unlimited CA-US Plan is the best Freedom Mobile plan, offering 100GB of full-speed 5G data for just $55/month. For a limited time, you'll also get an additional 20GB of Roam Beyond data, which can be used in over 92 destinations.

You can finance any phone that Freedom offers on this plan, including top-of-the-line models like the Apple iPhone 15 and the Google Pixel 8. If you've got a decent device lying around at home, you can also bring your own phone to this plan and save some money in the process, though you'll miss out on that large data bonus.

There are tradeoffs when signing up for Freedom, however. The network's infrastructure isn't as strong as the "Big Three" of Rogers, Bell, and Telus. Freedom's mobile coverage is strong in major Canadian cities like Toronto and Calgary but is spotty at best in many other places.

Methodology: How WhistleOut rates cell phone plans

WhistleOut evaluates phone plans based on the following criteria:

  • Price & value: Not all cheap plans are “bad,” and not all expensive plans are worth it. We look at everything a plan includes and compare it to other plans from the same carrier as well as similar plans from competitors in the market, to determine whether the value is consistent with the price.
  • High-speed data: Also called “premium” data, this is how much data you get at full 4G/5G speeds before they can or will slow down. The more guaranteed high-speed data the plan includes, the better experience you’ll generally have—but there’s also usually a limit to how much you actually need, and we ensure that you’re not overpaying for data that will go unused.
  • Coverage & network reliability: The breadth of each carrier’s 4G LTE and 5G networks determines your reception and service. Particularly in the case of 5G, some carriers offer far more robust coverage than others, which affects how their phone plans perform in different parts of the country.
  • Plan extras and perks: In addition to the basics—talk, text, and data—some plans throw in freebies like hotspot allowances, cloud storage, entertainment subscriptions, or service discounts.

Our mobile experts leveraged proprietary data and real-world customer feedback to evaluate the best Freedom Mobile plans. We considered plan-specific elements, including perks, and premium data allowances. After performing hands-on testing and extensive research, including customer feedback, we picked the Freedom plans we feel meet the needs of most people.
