Starlink is a division of SpaceX, providing high-speed satellite internet service to Canada and the world. In the past year, Starlink expanded its coverage map in Canada, with service now available in every province. Now, they're teaming with Rogers to expand cell coverage in rural areas of the country.
Starlink’s Residential satellite internet plan offers 150Mbps downloads for $140/month. While cheaper options are available in metropolitan areas, Starlink is unmatched in rural areas of the country that have historically struggled to provide affordable high-speed internet.
We’ve analyzed the Starlink coverage map and evaluated its internet speed so you can decide whether or not Starlink internet is right for you.
Starlink Canada coverage map
Starlink only arrived in Canada a few years ago, but their expansion has been rapid. Starlink internet is now available throughout all of Canada, with coverage available in every province.
Starlink satellites tracker
SpaceX currently has over 4,000 Starlink satellites in orbit. Jonathan McDowell, an astrophysicist at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, tracks all of Starlink's constellations on Jonathan's Space Pages. If you're looking to see a more visual representation of that data, we recommend FindStarlink, which allows you to find information on Starlink satellites near you and view live maps of the constellations' orbits.
Starlink availability
Starlink satellite internet is currently available throughout most of Canada for $140/month plus $759 upfront for hardware. Additional fees vary depending on your location. If you want to use your Starlink hardware on the go, Starlink Roam (formerly Starlink RV) gives you a portable Starlink dish and internet connectivity on the road for $170/month.
If you purchased Starlink Roam before Residential was available in your province, there's good news: you can switch Roam to Residential with just a few easy steps. Check out our guide to the differences between the two services, including a step-by-step guide about how to convert your plan.
Starlink internet speed
Starlink promises download speeds up to 150Mbps and low latency (also known as “ping rate” or delays in service). In our review of Starlink internet, we noted that 150Mbps is fast enough for a household of 4+ people and can support streaming, gaming, and video conferencing. As a satellite internet provider, Starlink uses satellites in space, rather than fibre-optic cables or phone lines, to connect to the internet. There are faster plans available from other internet service providers—including Bell, Rogers, and Telus—but the 4,000+ satellites in the Starlink constellation are capable of providing internet access to rural areas of Canada that most fibre and fixed broadband providers can't reach.Starlink vs. other satellite providers
Starlink isn’t the only provider offering satellite internet service to rural Canada. Let’s take a look at the competition.
Starlink internet vs. the competition

Starlink vs. Xplore
Xplore is the other major satellite internet provider in Canada, though Starlink’s speeds have left them far behind. The Satellite 350 plan, the fastest satellite plan from the provider, tops out at 25Mbps and has a data limit of 350GB. The plan is cheaper than Starlink at $79.99/month and just $199.00 for hardware and professional installation, but we don’t think the savings are worth what you lose in service. Starlink is the obvious choice here.
Starlink vs. Galaxy Broadband
Galaxy Broadband provides satellite internet to Nunavut and will be expanding its service by the end of 2023. Galaxy currently offers download speeds up to 50Mbps. Prices for Galaxy’s satellite internet depend on the exact location, so you should contact the provider directly to get an estimate for the service. We’re excited to see Galaxy Broadband expand its satellite internet service, especially in the rural areas of the country. As it stands, though, Starlink is the better pick.
