Rumors are flying suggesting that, alongside its increasingly popular Galaxy Note line of phablets, Samsung could be set to release a new set of phablets under the moniker of Samsung Galaxy Mega. While the name is definitely ripe for change, we’re more interested in the larger screens that these new handsets are said to sport.
The Mega 5.8 and 6.3, predictably, would sport 5.8 and 6.3 inch displays respectively. The Note line has already seen its own fair share of screen increases, going from 5.3 to 5.5 between the Note and Note II and the Note II is already rumored to be seeing its own screen increase.
As is becoming often with Android smartphone display sizes, we find ourselves once again asking ‘how much is too much’?
Firstly, should the Galaxy Mega rumor turn out to have a modicum of truth about it, it is unlikely that the Note III will see anything more than an increase to 5.6 inches, if that.
As far as a range of larger phablets, or mini tablets is concerned we don’t think it’s a particularly terrible idea. The Note range has already proved that there is a market for people out there that want a small tablet with phone capabilities. Granted, a 6.3 inch device is unlikely to replace someone’s phone as their primary communication device. Holding a 5.5 incher up to your head can look silly enough, but 6.3 would make even the most robust of users appear comically mismatched.
We don’t usually report rumors that have this little to back them up, but we find the idea of bridging the current size gaps between tablets and phablets to be interesting enough to comment on. Ultimately the release of the Galaxy Mega is probably unlikely, but we would have said the same thing about the Note before its release.
We guess you can just never really know what the next craze will be in the world of tech.
