Newer models of the Galaxy Fold have been released since the Galaxy Fold's debut. The Galaxy Fold may still be available from retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.
In spite of many challenges getting it to market, Samsung successfully launched the Galaxy Fold smartphone in the U.S. making it the first widely available premium device with a folding screen. After creating unique technology that would let a high resolution OLED screen fold without breaking, some early reviewers found they didn't always survive repeated use. To be fair, some reviewers assumed the plastic display was a screen protector and attempted to remove it and causing critical damage.
Samsung missed their initial summer 2019 release date for the U.S. and Canada. Once the last bugs were worked out of the display, Samsung released their revolutionary device to limited markets including the U.S and Australia (where WhistleOut has a full review of the Galaxy Fold).
Foldable Phones in Canada
Around the same time Samsung announced the Galaxy Fold, HUAWEI announced the Mate X. To date it's only been released in China and it isn't known if and when it will come to Canada.
LG recently became the first company to release a foldable smartphone in Canada by including a dual-screen accessory with the new LG G8X ThinQ Dual Screen. WhistleOut had a chance to give it a full review and we found that it was a bit large to handle, heavy and uneven in weight distribution. However, for as little as $1,079 you get two massive 6.4" OLED displays for multitasking. More importantly you'll be the envy of all your colleagues.
Motorola recently revived their iconic RAZR brand so they could enter the foldable smartphone market. WhistleOut was invited to an exclusive launch event in Los Angeles, U.S.A. to get some hands-on time with the new foldable Motorola razr. Unlike the competition, it folds vertically for a smaller profile. It also features slower hardware in order to prioritize battery life and price. The device is priced at $1,499 USD (about $2,000 Canadian), so it's still targeted at people who are ready to spend anything to get the coolest new gadget. Preorders in the US start on December 26 for a January 9, 2020 release date.
The Samsung Galaxy Fold Experience
Although no Canadian release date has been announced for the razr, it looks like Motorola would be the first to get a foldable screen smartphone into the Canadian market. Samsung was determined to win that title, so they are doing a limited release of the Galaxy Fold exclusively through their Samsung Experience Stores:
- CF Sherway Gardens - Etobicoke, Ontario
- CF Toronto Eaton Centre - Toronto, Ontario
- Yorkdale Shopping Centre - Toronto, Ontario
- Metropolis at Metrotown - Burnaby, British Columbia
- West Edmonton Mall - Edmonton, Alberta
Priced at a very steep $2,599, the Samsung Galaxy Edge is not available on two-year plans, but comes unlocked and should work on any major carrier network across Canada.
Samsung Galaxy Fold Hardware:
- Foldable Display: 7.3" QXGA+ Dynamic AMOLED (4.2:3)
- Exterior Display: 4.6" HD+ Super AMOLED (21:9)
- 10MP Cover camera, 10MP selfie camera, 3x rear cameras (16MP ultra-wide, 12MP wide-angle, 12MP telephoto)
- Snapdragon 855 CPU, 12GB RAM, 512GB storage, Android 9 (Pie)
- 4380mAh dual battery, fast charging on wired and wireless
- 4G-LTE Enhanced, WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.0
- Side-mount fingerprint scanner, Face recognition
It's a pleasant surprise that Canada will be getting the innovative Samsung Galaxy Fold. At $2,599 it's out of reach for most Canadians, but if you need that newest gadget then you can pick one up at Samsung Experience Stores starting December 6.
