Article Summary
Motorola released their newest flagship moto g7 smartphone and is exclusive to Videotron customers for the next few months. It can be purchased on contract for as little as $0 down or bought outright for less than $350.
While most smartphone manufacturers push the limits of smartphone hardware and features, they often push the limits of price. New flagship phones from Samsung cost more than two grand and even the more modest models are worth over $1,000. Motorola has built a niche market by scaling back some of the hardware to offer prices far below that if its competition. Their newest flagship, the moto g7, is no exception.
Just released this week as an exclusive to Quebec-based Videotron, the Motorola moto g7 features a 6.2" LTPS IPS LCD for rich colours and full 1080p+ resolution. The 12MP rear-facing camera is assisted by a second depth-finding camera to support better focus and unique features like the spot colour filter. The rear camera can record UltraHD video at 30fps. The front-facing camera is a respectable 8MP and supports HDR to help get accurate shots in bright or dark conditions.
High-speed LTE-A mobile connection is supported to offer download speeds over 100Mbps while on the go. At home WiFi is limited to 802.11n, but supports 5GHz so performance should still be good. There's a USB 2.0 Type-C connector for data and charging, and a good ol' 3.5mm headphone jack.
The CPU is mid-range, but includes recent technology and 4GB of RAM will keep this phone relevant for a few years to come. Onboard storage is 64GB and expandable with a microSD card up to 512GB.
These are all good features, but what really makes the moto g7 stand out is the price; $0 down on monthly plans starting at $54.55 or $349 outright. That's less than a third the price of most flagship phone models from Samsung, LG, Google or Apple. For the moment you can only pick it up in Quebec at Videotron locations, but it will become available to other carriers this summer. You may want to check out 3rd party retailers too, since buying a flagship phone without a contract can be much more affordable when it's under $350.
Picking a Videotron Mobile Plan
Although they run their own cell network in Quebec and Ottawa, Videotron has partners across the nation to provide full mobile service across Canada. There are many cell phone options with Videotron, and premium devices (like the Motorola moto g7) can be bought for low upfront cost on select 2-year plans.
Videotron plans typically offer more data than Rogers, Bell and Telus do elsewhere in Canada, but exclusive pricing to Quebec by those three sometimes makes Videotron the more expensive option. Even so, they regularly score near the top for customer satisfaction and network reliability.
