Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak is a favourite in tech circles for his candid views on shifts in consumer electronics, even when his no-holds barred commentary is directed at the company he helped create.

He is also on the record as a fan of Google’s work with the Android platform, but this doesn’t mean he loves everything with a little green robot. In fact, the Android-powered Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch falls to the bottom of his list.

“That was the only technology I bought to experiment with that I threw out after half a day, sold it on eBay because it was so worthless and did so little that was convenient.” said Woz in an interview with Xconomy.com.

This doesn’t mean Woz is ready to ditch the wearables concept altogether, in fact he is quite keen to see what comes next.

“I want my smartphone [on my wrist], but I really want the whole thing,” he said, saying that current wearables are just cumbersome middle-men between you and the phone you already carry in your pockets.

If we’re honest, Woz is just saying what we’re all thinking. Samsung did seem in a hurry to get a smartwatch in stores, but many reviews, from customers and critics, point to its being too heavy, uncomfortable and not particular useful.

The point Woz makes about the smartwatch being an intermediary is an interesting one, and it is something every smartwatch maker needs to consider. There are certain times or use cases where receiving a notification on your wrist is convenient, but if this is basically all your smartwatch does, it may be hard to have them flying off the shelves.
