Text International Travel Guide for Telus Mobility Customers over image of a woman in China taking a photo with a smartphone

Telus doesn't have the most countries serviced (that's Bell), and they don't have the most options (that's Rogers) but they do have the best balance between the two. To top it off they share the lowest daily travel rates at $14 per 24-hour period to the US and $16 to more than 200 countries worldwide.

Canada's largest, fastest, and most reliable network won't help you when you leave the country. Telus offers the best mobile service in the nation so your expectations should be equally high when you travel. Customers with a Telus Mobility account can easily travel south or to 200 countries without worrying about coming home to a bloated phone bill.

Whether you choose a daily plan that lets you use your home plan's minutes and data while abroad, or you buy a talk, text, and data add-on exclusive to the country you're visiting then Telus has affordable solutions for you. Quick trips, longer vacations, or regular visits all have different solutions so read on to find out what's best for you.

Telus Canada-US Travel Plans and Prices

Telus Easy Roam solutions make traveling easy. Once upon a time, taking your cell phone south of the border resulted in huge fees, and we've all heard horror stories of returning from vacation to a phone bill over $1,000. With Easy Roam, Telus charges you only $14/day for trips to the US, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands. While there you continue to use your minutes, texts, and data just like you were back in Canada. Calls within the US are included while traveling too!

You should always track how much time you talk and how much data you use since incurring overage charges in another country can still add up quickly.

Telus Canada-US daily plans:

Before you leave on your trip, confirm you're signed up for Easy Roam. You can do this by texting ROAM to 7626 or by logging into your My TELUS account.

Once you're traveling then call, text, or use data like you normally would. Telus will charge your account $14 and you'll have access to your regular plan just like you are back home in Canada. After 24 hours then it's a new day. Telus won't charge you another $14 until you use talk, text, or data again. The next 24 hours is another $14. When you return to Canada, the service will automatically stop.

Telus Canada-US vacation plans:

If you use Easy Roam in the US for 25 days or more in a month, your bill will be capped at $350. We don't recommend using Easy Roam for that amount of time: you'd be better off buying a prepaid SIM and prepaid plan while visiting the States.

Telus Canada-US plans for regular visitors:

If you travel back and forth to the US like most people go down the street to get groceries, the Telus' Canada-US plans let you use an existing Canada-wide plan while you go down south. The best of the bunch is the Unlimited 150 5G+ Can-US plan, which provides coverage and unlimited roaming throughout North America.

Telus international travel daily plans:

With support for 150+ countries, Roam Easy adds $16/day to your month-end bill. Each "day" ends 24 hours after it's activated. You won't be charged again until you use your minutes, texts or data but once you do then $16 gets you another 24 hours.

Telus international travel vacation plans:

You're only charged $16 over each 24-hour period from the first time you use your minutes or data. After that, you won't be charged again until you use your phone. So, if you make a call on Monday morning but then don't use your phone again until Thursday evening, you won't get charged for Tuesday or Wednesday.

After using Easy Roam for 25 days in a billing month you can keep using your minutes and data without any additional fees Your Easy Roam service is capped at $400/month so you can continue using Easy Roam for the rest of your billing period without additional charges. Remember this is by billing month, not calendar month so be aware when that starts.

Telus international travel for regular visitors:

Telus offers a great Canada-US plan for regular travelers but doesn't currently have plans for other countries.

What are my rights when roaming?

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) has a Wireless Code of Conduct that protects the rights of consumers when it comes to overage charges on cell phone bills. Once your carrier recognizes that you've traveled to an international roaming destination, the account holder AND the device user must be notified at no charge. You can opt out of these notifications by contacting your carrier, but you should keep them active.

It is up to your wireless provider to suspend roaming overage charges once it reaches $100 within a single monthly billing cycle (unless you've expressly consented to additional charges, as is the case with Easy Roam). Be aware that if your trip spans two billing cycles then you can incur that $100 maximum charge twice.

The cap applies on a per-account basis. If you have a Family Sharing plan then the $100 maximum overage only applies once to the account, not for every cell phone line on that account. Any roaming add-on you buy counts towards this cap. So, if you buy data to be used in the US for $20 then the most your carrier can charge you at the end of the month in overage fees is $80.

While roaming internationally, it's up to you to make sure you stay within the limits of your plan. Carriers typically provide an account management app or website where you can track these details in real time. The Wireless Code of Conduct only ensures that you don't wind up with a $8,000 bill when you come home.

Beware Flights and Cruises

Flights and cruises are awesome, but you might find yourself with hundreds of dollars in overage fees if you're not careful.

Turn off data roaming before hopping on a plane or cruise ship. Once on the plane or the open ocean, talk, text, and especially data rates can be astronomically expensive. If that happens, you may need to contact your carrier once you get back on land to authorize overage charges just to get service again.

For a quick way to block unwanted data use, turn on Airplane Mode. Even with Airplane Mode turned on, you can manually enable WiFi or Bluetooth.
